Oil Price inches to $35 after Iran welcomes output freeze

Oil price yesterday rose towards $35 a barrel and an industry report showed a surprise drop in the United States (US) inventories after Iran welcomed plans by Russia and Saudi Arabia to freeze output.
The gain added more than 7 per cent surge in the previous session which came even though analysts said that the market had overreacted to Iran’s support for the caps and the Russian-Saudi move would not likely reduce the global surplus.
Brent (LCOc1) rose 38 cents to $34.88 a barrel, having closed 7.2 per cent higher in the previous session, while the US crude (CLc1) gained 69 cents to $31.35.
“It’s a continuation of yesterday’s (Wednesday) move. What we see still is extreme volatility. I would not be surprised to see prices retreating again by a big margin in the coming days,” an analyst at Commerzbank, Carsten Fritsch, said.” Read more after the cut..

Court grants order to seize Tompolo’s properties

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has granted an order for the seizure of some properties belonging to former Niger Delta militant, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.
Justice Ibrahim Buba granted the order after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) told the court that the whereabouts of Tompolo is unknown. Read more after the cut.

Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa was on Sunday sworn-in for the second term in office, with the promise to move the state forward.

I can’t continue to pay salary with bank loans – Dickson tells Bayelsa workers

Bayelsa State Government has asked its workforce to brace up for the global economic challenge, as the practice of augmenting monthly salary with bank loans is not sustainable.

With a monthly wage bill of N4 billion for workers coupled with the shortfall in the monthly allocation from the Federation Account of between N3 to N4 billion, the State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, said it would be difficult for government to meet its financial obligation.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday in Yenagoa, Dickson said his administration would meet with stakeholders towards devising a policy aimed at solving the problem of salary payment in the state.

According to him, steps are already being taken to sanitize the civil service with the aim of blocking wastages and loopholes to ensure greater productivity and effective service delivery.

Dickson said, “There have to be some discussions with workers and stakeholders. We cannot be borrowing to pay salaries as we have been doing. Our workforce minus political appointees, we need about N4 billion to pay salaries; the situation is not sustainable and realistic because of our development agenda. Read more after the court

Senate urges military to beef up security in IDPs camps

Senate President Bukola Saraki, on Thursday urged the Military to beef up security in the Internally displaced Persons(IDPs) camps in order to protect them from insurgents’ attacks.
Saraki, in a statement issued in Abuja by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Mr Yusuph Olaniyonu, condemned the recent attacks in IDPs’ camps by the Boko Haram insurgents.
The statement was in reaction to the suicide bombing in an IDPs camp in Dikwa, Borno, where scores of persons including women and children were reportedly killed.
While sympathising with victims of the attack, the Senate President in the statement advised security forces to step up intelligence gathering activities in order to prevent future attacks on defenceless citizens.
